Ken Scholes grew up in a trailer outside a smallish logging town not far from the base of Mount Rainier in the Pacific Northwest.  Baptized into Story at a young age, he fed himself on Speed Racer, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants and Marine Boy sprinkled with a generous dose of dinosaur picture books.  When he was thirteen, he read Bradbury's essay "How to Keep and Feed a Muse" and knew he had to be a writer. When he was fourteen, he started writing stories of his own and by fifteen, he had started his own Rejection Slip Collection.

After a long break away from writing, Ken returned to it after logging time as a sailor, soldier, preacher, musician, label gun repairman, retail manager and nonprofit director. He sold his first story to Talebones Magazine in 2000 and won the Writers of the Future contest in 2004. His quirky, offbeat fiction continues to show up in various magazines and anthologies like Polyphony 6, Weird Tales and Clarkesworld Magazine.

In 2006, his short story "Of Metal Men and Scarlet Thread and Dancing with the Sunrise" appeared in the August issue of Realms of Fantasy. Later that year, inspired and taunted by his friends and family to finally write a novel, Ken extended that story and Lamentation was born. Lamentation is the first in a five book series from Tor Books called The Psalms of Isaak.  He has since also written Canticle, Antiphon, and Requiem in that series.

Ken lives near Portland, Oregon.  If you'd like to know more about Ken, you can  contact him through his website.

Maisie Richardson-Sellars, not Freema Agyeman, plays the role of Korr Sella, who is on Hosnian Prime to explain the threat of the First Order to the New Republic Senate when it is destroyed by the attack from Starkiller base.  Marshal's confusion was caused by an erroneous article on MoviePilot.com.

Journey #140 - The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more.

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

Shirley Jackson was a popular and controversial American author, who was born in December 14, 1916. She is best known for the short story The Lottery (1948).  She is also well known for the 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House, which was adapted in the 1963 Robert Wise film The Haunting.  She has influenced such writers as Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Nigel Kneale, and Richard Matheson.

Jackson's husband, the literary critic Stanley Edgar Hyman, wrote that "she consistently refused to be interviewed, to explain or promote her work in any fashion...She believed that her books would speak for her clearly enough over the years."

Delusion #27 - Rogue One Trailers

Rish and Marshal discuss the "new" Rogue One trailer. SPOILERS INCLUDED.  We also talk about Rebels and other tidbits.

To download, right-click here and then click Save

FACT Checker:

  • Marshal says Emperor Palpatine has not been in Rebels series.  Actually, his voice was heard as a hologram to Darth Vader at the end of the Season 2 opener "The Siege of Lothal": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjigBxuXpww
  • Marshal mis-quotes the SW:TFA line "Tell that to Kanjiklub." as "Tell it to Kublai Kahn."  Kublai Kahn was a Mongol emperor, and also the grandson of Genghis Khan.  He has no connection to Star Wars (that we know of).
  • The character of Saw Gerrera, played by Forest Whitaker in the movie, made his debut in season 5 of The Clone Wars, in the episodes “A War on Two Fronts,” “Front Runners,” “The Soft War,” and “Tipping Points.”

Delusion #25 - Fan Fiction Spin-off Showcase

Rish and Marshal make their pitches for spin-off fan fiction for the Star Wars universe.  Are their ideas any good?  You be the judge.

To download, right-click here and then click Save

Fact checker:
In coming up with my ideas, I wanted to include at least one pitch that mocked the worst clichés in bad fan fiction.  The worst fan fiction that I am aware of devolves into pornography, so I included a pitch that was the worst form of that.

Looking back, I added it mostly to shock Rish because he knows me and how far out of character that material is coming from me.  However, instead of leaving it as a private joke between the two of us, I went ahead and included it in our recording.  I’ve always had reservations about including it, and tried to add a bunch of language to explain how I wasn’t serious, but I still left it in.

Since it has aired, I have often considered editing the episode to exclude it, but figured I was just being a chicken and not trusting the audience to catch the intended humor.  But, I would think to myself, “The podcast is public.  What if this is the first episode that someone listens to?  They wouldn’t know me.  They wouldn’t have listened to all of my Journey Into… backlog of episodes.  Their first impression of me would be providing some rude, possibly offensive content.”  But still, I let it stand out of a fear of being wimpy.

The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was Disney’s firing of James Gunn for illicit tweets that he had made 10 years ago. I’m not going to comment on the rightness or wrongness of Disney’s decision except to say that we as a people will be judged by history according to the messages we have sent out into the world, especially in the digital landscape.  Those messages may often be experienced out of context and without knowledge of or searches for apologies, future personal growth, or changes of viewpoint.  I don’t want to be judged according to any messages of poor taste that I have allowed to be released into the world, or messages that may be of offense or hurtful to others.  Thus, my decision to edit about 1 min. 45 secs. of audio out of this episode.

But regardless of the journey, there should be action, plot, motivation, and choices.  Observations of pensive thought is not what I’m looking for.

Journey #139 - Double Header: What Price Convenience by Christopher Munroe & A Slight Delay by Rish Outfield

Special Thanks to Bria Burton for producing today's stories, and to Keith Teklits for editing the commentary!!

Cast of characters:
What Price Convenience
James Silverstien as Narrator
Big Anklevich (of The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine) as Customer
Rish Outfield (of The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine) as Old Merchant

A Slight Delay
Big Anklevich (of The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine) as Narrator
Rish Outfield (of The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine) as TWA passenger; and Captain
Bria Burton as Flight Attendant, Bria; and hispanic passenger
Heather Lenhart as Passenger
Renee Chambliss as Passenger
Marshal Latham as the Air Marshal

Christopher Munroe is an actor/author/comedian from Calgary, Canada, where he lives, works, writes and spends too much time on Twitter. He’s also a prolific and podcasted author of short and flash fiction, Christopher has also written the very entertaining surrealist horror novel, Broken Escalator, which he spent months of his life writing, and now finds himself mildly nervous every time he’s inside a mall.

Rish Outfield is a fan of Horror films, Eighties music, and the television work of Joss Whedon. He enjoys chasing after frogs, talking about comic book characters, and thinking about the Star Wars Trilogy. He is a voice actor, audiobook narrator, and podcaster, and can be heard co-hosting the Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine and That Gets My Goat podcasts, where he and Big Anklevich entertainingly waste much of their time. He also features his own stories on the Rish Outcast podcast.  He has been a writer of short stories all of his life, but has only recently begun to share his work with others. He once got a job because of his Sean Connery impersonation, but has lost two due to his Samuel L. Jackson impression.
